Abe and Irene PoIlin

Abe and Irene PoIlin, photo by Mitchell Layton, Washington Sports and Entertainment
The first time business magnate Abe Pollin visited the site where he would later build what is now the Verizon Center, downtown was so infested with crime and drugs that he was warned not to get out of the car. But Pollin and his wife, Irene, active community philanthropists as well as wealthy sports-team owners, were determined to move their outdated suburban arena downtown to revitalize urban Washington. After decades of failed schemes, Washingtonians viewed the grandiose project with both hope and skepticism. The arena opened in 1 997 to a sellout crowd, has since entertained more than 25.3 million visitors, and has been widely acclaimed as the catalyst that sparked a renaissance: after the Pollins invested in the arena, developers followed suit, turning abandoned buildings into destination restaurants, bars, theaters, and shops. Washington paid tribute to Pollin by renaming a section of F Street "Abe Pollin Way."
