Photographed during the National Convention of the Checker Car Club of America in Springfield, Illinois on June 16-18, 2011. This photograph was taken at the Chatham Railroad Museum during a group cruise of old U.S. Route 66.

You are invited to stay and browse through my stream. Here's a quick index to my little corner of Flickr:

Automobile Photographs
: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Central Illinois (except Springfield)
: Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "countryside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois
: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

The Illinois State Fair
: My collection of photographs of the Illinois State Fair. The fair offers something for everyone. Grab a corn dog and lemon shake-up, and come take a look!

Beyond Central Illinois
: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Barbers & Barber Shops
: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

Thanks for stopping by! - myoldpostcards (Randy von Liski)

This is a nice big old computer fan. While running it makes noise like a starting plane. But the airflow is fantastically - like driving 50km/h by car with open windows :-)

(In this picture its wind-powered as you might guess while looking at the plug ;-) )

Photograph of wreck of the Southern Railway train
passenger car photo index
Date: August 15, 1930

Object number: A.2009-47

Medium: paper; photo-emulsion

Description: Wreckage of a Southern railway train that crashed after striking a cow late at night near Chappels, South Carolina. The locomotive, two mail coaches and a Pullman passenger car were among the most heavily damaged cars. No passengers were injured, but the train's engineer and firemen were killed and the Railway Post Office clerks George Mulligan and D.A. Shealy of Columbia, South Carolina, were injured when tossed about in the mail car. Railroad companies usually placed the Railway Mail Service cars between the tender and rest of the train in order to protect passengers during train wrecks. As a result the railway mail cars, and the clerks aboard them, were at greater risk in accidents. National Postal Museum, Curatorial Photographic Collection Photographer: Unknown

San Francisco, CA Muni Railway Cable Car # 12 lays over near the Powell and Market Street turntable, with one of the personnel (the conductor, I think...) trying to keep his hand warm (...and smoking, not allowed on the car...) standing beside the car. Taken by a Nikon D40x at ISO 1600 with a Nikon 18-55mm non-VR kit lens (at 26) Exposed 1/15th of a second.

There a a variety of light sources providing the illumination for this available light photo - including sodium-vapor & mercury vapor lamps, neon lighting, fading daylight, and fluorescent and incandescent store window displays.

"DOUBLE DUMPSTERS"
From The Doubles Series

One fine summer evening in Portland, an old friend of mine, a brilliant graphic designer named Michael Casey, gave me a roll of "spy" film. We were in his studio just down the hall from mine. "See what you can do with it," he mused... "it's really kind of unusual, or so I'm told."

Taking the challenge I took my trusty Nikon out of my studio and on to the street. There I was immediately confronted with the most unusual scene, a visual pun which included a billboard and trucks. The billboard headline proclaimed, "Look! Double Coupons." Beneath the billboard were two identical delivery trucks parked side by side. So, I took the photograph of the sign and the trucks all doubled up amusing myself with this clever chance arrangement of pairs. Seldom had Madison Avenue found such a concurrency linked to an actuality!

Proceeding down the street I immediately ran into identical male twins with their identical twin vans. Holy smoke, I thought... this must be fate. I asked permission to photograph the twins in front of their vans and went on my merry way looking for more. By now I knew this was my destiny! All I could see were doubles, no matter where I turned. Snake Eyes!

Please enjoy this image of garbage dumpsters found in an ally way in this series of doubles.

This nocturnal image is looking toward the entrance to a Victorian House apartment complex in NW Portland. The color values are enhanced by the processing and manipulation from the original B&W Kodak Recording Film, lending a beautiful other worldly sensibility.

The Willys MB US Army Jeep (formally the Truck, 1/4 ton, 4x4) and the Ford GPW were manufactured from 1941 to 1945. These small four-wheel drive utility vehicles are considered the iconic World War II Jeep, and inspired many similar light utility vehicles. Over the years, the World War II Jeep later evolved into the "CJ" civilian Jeep. Its counterpart in the German army was the Volkswagen Kübelwagen, also based on a small automobile, but which used an air-cooled engine and lacked 4 wheel drive.

This is a Jeep Wrangler Sahara which I witnessed loosing it's back left wheel as he was turning a corner. Poor guy didn't know what happened or where his wheel went.
Well, the missing wheel sailed across 9th street hopped the curb almost taking out a kid standing on the corner. Then crashed into the side of a Toyota Camry. Made a mess. The guy was grateful the kid wasn't hurt.

From an old scrapbook I purchased from the Wisconsin Dells. All the photos were glued in so I can't see if any information was recorded. I ope one of you can ID the car - it is a beauty.

I think the license plate is from Illinois 1937 (but not sure of the year).
