Nice Car Photo Comparison photos

Printed VS Scanned

Both images are crops of A31788-36, taken on May 15th, 1999.

The top image was given to me about ten years ago. It was my first aerial photo. It was cropped at 350% from the original large format positive film print by a machine that crops an area of the image and blows it up, then prints it out on photo paper.

The bottom image I purchased again last week, not necessarily just for the lack of wear but for quality reasons. Instead of cropping and printing it out, the whole film print was scanned at 1200dpi on a scanner, and then e-mailed to me.

This is a comparison of when you blow up and print out a copy of an image, and when you simply scan it at the highest resolution possible with large format film. When re-printed from the machine, the print tones came out very green/yellow-tinged. Also, the quality is much lower; you can't possibly squeeze 1200 droplets of ink onto such a small area whereas you can scan at 1200dpi from a film print that's large-format and get extremely close with a tonne of detail.

The scanned version wins in this regard - the color tones are true to the original print and the quality is such that you can see lots of tiny things you wouldn't spot on the printed copy - you can zoom into the scanned image to the point you can see actual cars, unlike the blurry dots on the printed version.

Plus, it doesn't particularly deteriorate and tear and rip and get drawn on, and I've got the whole un-cropped image (I cropped the bottom image to the same dimensions as the top to compare them) which covers a much broader area, which I never could see with the cropped print I've had all these years.

I threw this together to help illustrate the differences between normal photos and HDR.
