Nice Swift Car Photo photos

BMT/IND cars

These cars are wider and longer than our cars in Chicago, as well as the IRT cars. New York's system, unlike Chicago's, wasn't built all with compatible specifications for the various lines, and so the BMT (lettered lines, along with the IND, which was added later by the city as an expansion of the BMT), when built, having wider and longer cars, with station platforms and turn radii in tunnels being designed for that, isn't compatible with the IRT lines (numbered).

In the 70s, state-of-the-art test cars built by the FTA (the SOAC, or "state of the art car," naturally) were built to BMT specs, but were tested on many systems, including Chicago's.

In Chicago's case, they decided to just run it on the Skokie Swift because that line would require the least amount of modification. They actually had to sever off part of the platforms at Dempster St(Skokie) and Howard St, and add pantographs to the cars since there was no third rail for part of the line at the time (this practice ended just last year). For safety, they added flaps to the platforms that would flip up for CTA cars, but flip down for the SOAC cars built as wide as what you see in this photo here. Otherwise, the train would clip the platforms.

Stellar Swirl and Perseid Meteors over Stanmer Church
swift car photo
A passing car illuminated the church and trees during one of the exposures.

This same image has been labelled with part of the constellation Perseus here.

These two perseid meteors (with localised enhanced contrast) were recorded at 23:00:44 and 23:21:44 BST on Thursday, 12th August 2010.

This image is built up from a number of exposures, layered in Photoshop using the "Lighten" blending mode. The tapering "comet tail" effect was achieved by progressively changing the opacity of successive layers.

Sensor Speed Setting: ISO 1600
f-number (f/#): f/4.5
A composite image of 71 x 30 second exposures = 2130 seconds (35 mins. 30 secs.)
Overall Time Span: 22:43 BST to 23:57 BST (4440 seconds / 1hr. 14 mins.)

Camera Location: 50.870° N -0.102° E

Part of a set / Slideshow featuring images of stars, the night sky and the occasional meteor taken during the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower in August 2010.

The image includes two perseid meteors (indicated with OnMouseOver notes) which were recorded at 23:00:44 and 23:21:44 BST on 12th August 2010. All the other tracks - also with locally enhanced contrast - are aircraft, identified by serrated trails caused by their winking lights.
