Dining Cars Cafe

While driving on the 101 from San Luis Obispo to Oxnard, I happened to catch in the corner of my eye an extremely interesting vintage cafe resturant. After taking a second glance I decided to investigate further. I drove several miles and took the first exit into Buellton, California. I then drove northbound on a narrow road (Jonata Park Road--which was originally Highway 101) that runs parrallel to the modern-day 101, weaving under Andersen's Split Pea Resturant billboards. I finally arrived and tried to take in the magnificance of the building. Because there was a residential home several hundred feet away, I decided not to explore any closer in order to avoid arousing any suspion. In the top left corner of this photograph is how the cafe looked (in almost the same angle) from a late 1940's postcard.
Originally opened as Mullen's Dining Car Cafe in 1946; this novelty resturant operated during the heyday of American roadside services. The owner, Ed Mullen, had been a veteran steward on real rail dining cars and had managed to transport extra Los Angeles Railway Standard cars from the L.A. Electric Railway Co. to the rural town Central California coastal town of Buellton. Located strategically on the busy Highway 101, the resturant drew many patrons that were travelling between the Bay and L.A. The owner added gas service pumps to draw in more visitors. However in 1955, the California State Highways Department realigned and expanded Highway 101 to serve the increasing traffic. The cafe, which stood on the original highway, became severely impacted when 101 was moved. Since 1958 the site remained abandoned and dilapidated, bearing battle scars of time.

Renault Design Central Europe presented, at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, a concept car named Dacia Duster.
This concept vehicle (a SUV/sports coupe crossover ) addressed the needs of families, with a roomy cabin in a compact package and a large 470 L (124 US gal; 103 imp gal) trunk. The car had a very efficient motor capable of emitting 139 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer and a fuel consumption of 5.3L/100km (44.38MPG US, 53.3MPG Imperial). The Dacia Duster was the first concept car entirely made by Dacia. The Duster normally has four seats but can be converted into a two seat car, the passenger seat slides under the driver's seat and the right back seat slides under the left back seat freeing an extra room of 2,000 L (71 cu ft) ideal for a bicycle.
The Duster concept car had a Dacia Logan 1.5 litre inline-4 engine equipped with Bosch Mono-Jetronic fuel injection producing 106 PS (78 kW; 105 hp) at 5400 rpm and 240 newton metres (180 ft·lbf) at 2000 rpm of torque. It was a front engined, two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle based on the Nissan B platform. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.6 seconds. If the model had been produced, its initial price would have been around 15,000 euro (US$ 18,750).
