Ubehebe Crater - Outside Rim Panorama

Ubehebe Crater - Outside Rim Panorama

Believe it or not, this is the view from the parking lot for Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley National Park. We actually saw a fancy couple make the drive all the way out to here in a new Mercedes and they didn't even get out of their car. I imagine that the cinders are difficult to negotiate in heels but at least take a look from the paved viewing area!

This crater is up to 777' deep. Boja and I went in there and took a good look around for a while. The flat area at the bottom of this crater is huge but you can easily speak to your friends inside from far away without yelling.

The craggy areas in the center of this picture are little canyons. Some of them go quite a ways back!

Getting in is pretty easy. The trail is basically a giant pile of gravel. You can safely descend in a series of really fun jumps. Unfortunately, the walk back up is awful - especially if the sun is out at all that day. Boja and I were suffering on that black hellish slope in December. I can't even imagine what it would be like in the summer.

I´ve got the 4 pics to make the mosaique of this beauty as I did with the Isetta and the Mustang... :D

Talking about my usual image editor -Macromedia Fireworks- causing me trouble in the past photo, this one was done with Photofiltre a very respectable freeware photo editor you can download from here: www.photofiltre.com

A nice extra feature: you have the option of keeping the exif data of the original picture after you have edited,. as you can see in this case. That´s cool.

Steve Prefontaine at Husky Stadium, Seattle, April 8, 1972, at an Oregon-Washington dual meet

These photos were taken April 8, 1972, at an Oregon-Washington dual meet at Husky Stadium, Seattle WA.

In the right photo, Steve Prefontaine leads University of Washington's Rick Albright, left. Oregon runner Rick Ritchie's head is showing between Albright and Pre in the photo. The runner at far left rear with dark trim on his singlet is Washington runner Bob Branden. In front of him and almost completely hidden by Albright is Oregon runner Wes Smiley.

In the left photo, Washington's Bob Brandon, 2nd from the left partially hidden by Pre, placed 2nd. Wes Smiley, far left placed 3rd. Rick Albright at far right behind Pre placed 4th. The water reflection gives you an idea of just how wet the track was.

Pre won the mile race in 4:07.3--pretty impressive for a slog through the rain puddles.

Pre is wearing a "Run for Fun" t-shirt under his Oregon Singlet. He is photographed elsewhere in this set wearing this T-shirt while training in Brunswick. Maine, before leaving for Europe and the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He also wore it in an indoor meet and in the 1971 AAU track and field championship meet--probably after his race. I have images of several runners of the era wearing the same t-shirt.

Known finishing times:

1. Pre (U OR) 4:07.3
2. Bob Branden U WA) 4:08.5
3. Wes Smyley (U OR) 4:09.2
4. Rick Albright (U WA) unk
5. Rick Ritchie (U OR) 4:15.0

The info is quoted from a report by Eugene Register-Guard sports editor Blaine Newnham, April 9, 1972.

Oregon won the meet, 109-54.

#13 Test Track Queue Details

This photo used to be numbered as 12 as well as the previous one. The numbering has been updated in all photos after this. Thank you!

Gotta love the Test Track queue. Lots of people complain about the music, but that element doesn't seem to bother me.

There are so many details in this queue that it would take forever to photograph them all. This is one of my favorites. The "No Parking Any Time" sign and the example light pole is an awesome addition.

If I had one complaint to make about Test Track, it's that every day it seems to brake down. But other than that, it's an awesome ride.

This photo I sort of "auto fixed" in an editor, and just increased the saturation a tad.
